In the family, children learn and build values and attitudes that they will bring with them throughout their lives. The values that they get inside the family will be the basis for their actions in the future.

An individual’s closest relationships are often formed form birth and then honed over many years of interaction, collaboration and emotional and psychological development. In a Western environment, it can be said that as an individual grows and develop focus is placed heavily on promoting independence and separation from the family unit.

Filipinos are traditionally close to their families and children who are reared and brought up in a traditional Filipino family will most likely get the values and traditions that his or her family inculcated to him or her.

If the children play and have fun with grandparents, they develop a liking for elders, and they learn to respect elders. Once they see their parents behaving well with the grandparents they also learn how to behave with elders. This presence of elders in a family makes the bonds still more pleasant and more lasting.
